Gianluigi Buffon is one of the five goalkeepers mentioned on the FIFA FIFPro World XI 2012 shortlist. The Italian national team and Juventus captain composed his World XI last week.

A special delegation of the Italian professional footballers association (AIC), including board member and FIFPro president Leonardo Grosso, was welcomed at the training ground of Juventus, the reigning champions of Italy.

Gianluigi Buffon was one of many players meeting Grosso and his colleagues and composing their personal World XI. Among the other players dropping in were Claudio Marchisio, Sebastian Giovinco, Andrea Barzagli, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Simone Pepe, Lucio, Emanuele Giaccherini, Simone Padoin, Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci.

Grosso and Buffon were invited to pose in front of the cameras; two goalkeepers sharing a moment together. In his playing career Grosso defended the goal of Genoa, among others.

Talking about goalkeepers: Buffon had to select a goalkeeper for his World XI. He picked Petr Cech, the goalkeeper of Chelsea. On Tuesday, Cech and Chelsea visited Buffon and Juventus for their match u-p in the Champions League. Juventus convincingly beat Chelsea, the current Champions League title holders, with 3-0. Buffon had an easy time and witnessed how Fabio Quagliarella, Arturo Vidal and Sebastian Giovinco managed to put three past Cech…

In the seven-year history of the FIFPro World XI, Buffon was named twice in the World XI: in 2006 and 2007 his colleagues proclaimed him the best in the business. The last four years Iker Casillas took that honour from Buffon, but the Italian goalkeeper was always close: in all those years Buffon was on the shortlist.

In fact, since the introduction of the FIFPro World XI in 2005, Buffon has always made the shortlist. Thirteen more players could equal that record if they follow the example of Buffon and will also be named to this year’s shortlist: Ashley Cole, Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o, Rio Ferdinand, Kaká, Frank Lampard, Lúcio, Alessandro Nesta, Andrea Pirlo, Carles Puyol, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and John Terry.
