Cypriot federation agrees to co-operate with players
Monday 11 January

The players’ union of Cyprus (PASP) called of a strike and has come closer to the national football association (CFA). Last Tuesday both parties had a very fruitful meeting.
Three weeks ago the PASP was planning a strike on 2 and 3 January for players in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Division. The players were angry with the CFA, which had refused to co-operate with the PASP on several issues. In reaction the CFA ordered clubs to fire players if they would go on strike, and summoned PASP president and player Spyros Neofytides (photo) to appear before the Disciplinary Committee.
Since, a lot has changed. At first the CFA withdrew the charges against Neofytides. Next the football federation invited the PASP for a meeting, that was held Tuesday 5 January. The PASP accepted the invitation and postponed the strike. Neofytides and four board members met with the CFA board. The talks were held in ‘good spirit’.
At this meeting the CFA promised the PASP a permanent place on its technical committee. This means that the players will have influence on the playing schedules for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Division. The CFA also promised a better co-operation; if the PASP asks for a meeting, this will be organized within two weeks. And the CFA arranged new meetings with the PASP about issues like military service for players and an insurance plan for players.
Besides that the CFA explained the current status of the NDRC, which is still not implemented and enforced, although both parties had signed an agreement last Summer. The federation said it is waiting for FIFA to confirm the agreement, after which the NDRC can be implemented and enforced.
As a result of the talks, the PASP is not planning a strike any more. The players’ union hopes the CFA will keep its word and will solve the problems.
