Peru: players paralyse the start of the Championship

Monday 20 February

The Association of Unionized Football Players of Peru (SAFAP) decided not to start off the 2012 Championship last weekend, because the Professional Football Sporting Association (ADFP) did not eliminate the imposition of the method of payment of debts as in the 2011 season, and did not amend the topic referring to checks on payrolls for this year.

The previous day, SAFAP had notified its total rejection of the conditions of entry to the 2012 Competition that were approved and confirmed on Friday by the Assembly of the ADFP. The articles referring to debts to Peruvian football players on 31 December 2011 attempt to impose an obligation of the method of payments, on the sole decision of the Clubs, over 24 months.

The ADFP decided last Friday to begin the competition without modifying the articles that infringe the interests of Peruvian professional football players.

By approving these terms of the conditions of entry without taking account of the remarks made by the Union, the ADFP and the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) are trying to institutionalize this abuse in professional football.

The usual practice was that, following a dialogue with SAFAP, the indebted clubs paid what they owed in four, five, six or, at the maximum, ten instalments, in accordance with agreements made with the backing of the ADFP, and all of this within one calendar year.

By this change in the regulations, Peru takes a backward step: not only are workers' rights being violated, but in addition every advance that has been made in recent years may be lost, giving Peruvian football players an uncertain future and taking us back to the abuses of years gone by.
