FIFPro regrets IFAB decision: 'This is frustrating'

Monday 08 March

FIFPro is very disappointed about the decision which IFAB took last Saturday, to definitely not introduce goal-line technology. ‘This is incomprehensible and very frustrating', thinks Tijs Tummers, the secretary of FIFPro’s Technical Committee.

From a recent survey held by FIFPro under the captains of the clubs which participated in the Europa League it turned out that more than 90 per cent of the players are in favour of the introduction of goal-line technology. Tummers: ‘But not only the players, also trainers and referees favour the introduction of goal-line technology. This decision from IFAB is an insult for everyone working professionally in football.’

Within the IFAB - which consists of representatives of the four British associations and FIFA - the English and Scottish representative were also in favour of goal-line technology, but the representatives of Northern Ireland, Wales and FIFA were against.

Tummers: ‘The Irish representative said, "We very much appreciate the human side of the game, the debate, the controversy". What is there to appreciate in a valid goal that is not given? You can't give clearer proof of amateurism.’

Tummers is particularly surprised that in the argumentation of IFAB no distinction whatsoever is made between goal-line technology and other use of video cameras. ‘There are all kinds of snags involved in the extensive use of video pictures. But goal-line technology is simple, 100 per cent correct, it doesn't take the momentum out the game and does no damage to the human face of football. That should have been implemented, while further use of technology could be studied in the meantime.’

‘It is like Arsène Wenger said’, concluded Tummers with the words of Arsenal’s manager:  ‘You want as much justice as possible. If you love football you want the right decisions to be made.’
