FIFPro Division Americas visits Guatemala
Tuesday 27 July

FIFPro Division Americas recently visited Guatemala and El Salvador. Footballers in the two countries from Middle America have established players’ associations. In the future these associations hope to become a FIFPro member. A report from the Guatemala visit.
Pablo Melgar is the current president of the footballers’ association of Guatemala, AFG. Currently, the 30-year old defender plays for USAC, and he has represented the national team of Guatemala 55 times. As president of the AFG Melgar hopes to establish the same conditions for Guatemalan footballers as for all other players in the world.
Delegates of FIFPro Division Americas and AFG organized reunions with the national football league of Guatemala. And the national football federation Fedefut welcomed the representatives of FIFPro and AFG at its headquarters and had a ‘pleasant conversation’.
Both the national football league and the Fedefut promised to officially recognize the AFG as the lone representative of all professional footballers in Guatemala. With that promise another important step is taken on the path of the players’ association in this country.
