South Africa mourns after death of Bafana star

Monday 30 August

Oscar Selele Ntwagae passed away on Friday 27 August. The former player of the South African national team was killed in a traffic accident.

Ntwagae died when he got hit by a car in Germiston. The defender was knocked down while walking on his way back from training at Jomo Cosmos, where he was on trial.

‘We are very devastated to hear about the untimely death of one of our members’, reacted Elvis Sekgobela, spokesman of the South African Players Union SAFPU. ‘Ntwagae was one of the best defenders in the country and a player who contributed a lot to the development of football in the country.’

Ntwagae was a professional football player for the Mamelodi Sundowns, the Platinum Stars and SuperSport United. He played 15 matches for the national team of South Africa. SAFPU spokesman Sekgobela added: ‘Ntwagae played a very important role for both Platinum Stars and Sundowns and his defensive skills will be sorely missed.’

‘I got the shock of my life when I heard that Oscar had passed away’, reacted Vincent Kobolo, friend and Moroka Swallows defender. ‘I knew Oscar because we stay in the same complex in Germiston. His car had a problem and he asked me to take him to training at Cosmos.’

‘During the trip he told me that he was grateful that Jomo Sono (the owner of Jomo Cosmos) had given him a chance to play again. When I dropped him off, he said he would take a taxi back to his place as I would be in camp for my team's game against Sundowns…’
