Phantom goals: Roda JC and Fiorentina suffer
Tuesday 31 August

The Italian Serie A kicked off last weekend. Napoli midfielder Edinson Cavani was the maker of the first dubious goal. In The Netherlands Roda JC was not awarded a clear goal.
Cavani scored after six minutes in Sunday’s game at Fiorentina. From an Andrea Dossena cross the Uruguayan international headed against the crossbar. The ball crashed down right on the goal-line, as television replays from multiple angles proved. But referee Andrea Gervasoni and his linesman judged that the ball had crossed the line: 0-1 for Napoli.
Fiorentina coach Sinisa Mihajlovic was furious, even after his team managed a 1-1 draw. ‘They got it wrong and they know that’, Mihajlovic said. ‘It wasn't a goal, but in football these things can happen.’
One day earlier, Roda JC and Laurent Delorge had been less lucky than Napoli and Cavani. In Roda’s home match against Heracles Almelo, the Belgium midfielder was ready to celebrate his second and his team’s fourth goal of the match.
But referee Björn Kuipers and his assistant thought that the ball had not crossed the goal-line before defender Mark Looms cleared it. Therefore no 4-0 on the scoreboard. Unfortunately television replays showed that the ball was clearly behind the goal-line. In the end Roda won with 4-2, although Heracles had cut the lead to 3-2.
