Doka Madureira picked up the award for Best Footballer in Bulgaria during the tenth annual players’ gala organized by the ABF, the professional footballers’ association of Bulgaria. There was a very special award for the players of PFC Pirin.
The ABF Gala in the Sheraton Hotel of Sofia generated a lot of publicity. The union’s president Doncho Donev and secretary general Georgi Boychev welcomed many special guests, among others the prime minister of Bulgaria, Boiko Borisov, the minister of Finances, Simeon Diankov, the vice-president of the football federation, Atanas Furnadzhiev, and the president of the football league, Stefan Kapralov.
Doka Madureira was elected Best Footballer of the 2010/2011 season by all professional footballers in Bulgaria who participated in the vote organized by the ABF. The Brazilian forward of Litex Lovech played a very important role in his club’s rise to the top. Litex are on the verge of successfully defending their 2010 championship title. With two more games to play they are five points ahead of rivals Levski. Gara Dembele (Levski) and Spas Delev (CSKA) were the runners-up.
Aleksandar Tonev, a 21-year old forward from CSKA, received the award for Best Young Player. Litex’ coach Luboslav Penev was named Coach of the Year. And CSKA captain Todor Yanchev was given the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The footballers of PFC Pirin received the Award for Courage and Character. They showed their class and dedication by performing at their best although they experienced many problems receiving their salaries due to financial difficulties of their club.
