Jacob Mulenga is among dozens of players who have come up against a wall in their efforts to get paid in Chinese football.

Cameroon-born Marc Orland Etougou suffered non-payment in 2013 from Indonesian club Persiwa Wamena. Even though the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber ruled in Etougou’s favour in 2015, the 41-year-old has still not received his salaries.

Players from Indonesian second-tier side Kalteng Putra have not been paid in months. When they protested by going on strike, the club told them to leave, and when they posted their complaints on social media, the club reported them to the police. One of the 25 affected players, speaking anonymously and on behalf of his team-mates, shares his experience.
