With only eleven players making the World XI, it is a consequence that some of the most fantastic footballers on the planet do not make the team. Stars such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Luis Suarez, Eden Hazard and Yaya Touré were unable to crack the line-up, just as five members of the 2014 World XI.

Toni Kroos is one of those five former members. Last year the German player of Real Madrid was part of the three-men midfield that included Andrés Iniesta and Ángel Di Maria. This time, Kroos ended fourth in the midfielders’ election, right behind his Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric.

The vote for the 2014 World XI went down in history as one of the most exciting elections with three players narrowly missing out on a spot in this elite team. The 2015 vote missed that thrill. Looking at the way the 26,478 professional footballers voted, it was apparently very clear who the eleven best players of 2015 were.

Of all players missing out on a spot in the World XI, Kroos came closest. Yet, he was clearly beaten by Modric who collected 934 more votes.

The three other runners-up lost by even larger margins. Luis Suarez finished with 2,668 votes less than Neymar, David Alaba missed out on Thiago Silva’s total by 3,034 votes , and David De Gea received 9,931 fewer votes than Manuel Neuer.
