The football fields of Austria's professional clubs are assessed by players in the VdF Pitch Competition. Throughout the season, the Austrian footballers union (VdF) asks one player from each visiting team to rate the pitch at the end of every match. Conclusion: the pitches in the country's second division (Erste Liga) are better than the ones used in the top-flight Bundesliga.

The views of the players, who have to cope with the fields that make up their world, reveal some interesting results. The rating of pitches in the Erste Liga produced an average score of 7.13, while the Bundesliga registered 6.5.

In the Bundesliga, Ried are the kings of lawn maintenance. The club, which finished in sixth place in Austria this season, received the award for the Liga's best gardeners. A respectable distance behind them, in second place, came newly-crowned Austrian champions FC Salzburg, followed by last season's league winners Austria Wien.

According to the players, Grödig possesses the worst playing surface in the Bundesliga. Not that the local players seemed to mind - they did enough to finish third and qualify for next season's Europa League.

In the Erste Liga, Mattersburg retained its crown by delivering a first-class surface for the players, even without the pitch-heating system demanded by the Bundesliga. Altach's rating in eighth place was considered a disappointment for the club which had won promotion from the third division. In the players' eyes, only Vienna and Parndorf did worse.
