Not an isolated event
The abuse within the Afghanistan Women's National Team is part of a global and systemic issue in all sports that affects all players. From gymnastics to football and swimming, many scandals also reveal the profound changes that institutions need to improve awareness, procedures, and processes.

The need for clear procedures
There is a lack of proper and transparent procedures. Because of that, too often, claims by victims or whistleblowers remain unattended – which is disastrous. Clear procedures and explicit protections are the basis of a fair and safe system; that can prevent and address abuse adequately, efficiently, and with determination.

An independent supervisory body
FIFA announced establishing an independent, multi-sports, multi-agency international entity to investigate abuse cases in sports. Its execution has quite a way to go, together with internationally recognized organizations that defend human rights and are specialized in this field.
