The Truth About Match-Fixing in Football

When the football system consistently fails players, such as by not paying wages on time or not acting on reports, it creates an environment where criminals can exploit the situation for their own benefit.

A FIFPRO study amongst 13,000 professional footballers in 2016 found that 40 percent of those players reported none or delayed payments of salaries, highlighting how the system is systematically failing players. It in turn provides a terrain for criminals to exploit footballers in financial difficulties, such as those not regularly receiving salaries from clubs.

According to research from FIFPRO, one in 10 players during their career will be approached.

FIFPRO and national player unions worldwide are dedicated to ensuring that players have a safe working environment. In the context of match-fixing, the Red Button app enables players to report any suspicious approaches anonymously, alerting law enforcement and relevant authorities in their country to take action.
